Engineering enterprises are sitting on enormous, high-value data — BOMs, change history, CAD, specifications, decades of the digital thread connecting design to production. Almost none of it can be queried in plain language. PLM systems were built to store engineering knowledge, not to answer questions about it.
AI changed what should be possible. In practice, it hasn't, for two reasons: generic AI tools aren't built for engineering data — configuration effectivity, revision control and change traceability aren't things a general-purpose model understands by default. And generic PLM integrators aren't built for AI — they can configure Windchill, but grounding a language model in it correctly is a different discipline entirely.
